Penrith’s population grew by 6,364 people between 2006 and 2011 according to recently released data from the 2011 Census.
.
In the same period Penrith also got older with the average age of a Penrith resident moving from 32 years in 2006 to 34 years in 2011.
.
Other interesting figures emerging from the new data from the Census include:
.
- Average household size remained stable at 2.9 people per household.
- Total average household income grew in nominal terms from $1,163 to $1,398
- The proportion of households with a mortgage increased from 41.8% in 2006 to 43.8% in 2011.
- Penrith households had an average of 1.8 cars in 2011 – with 20.1% of households owning more than 3 cars compared to only 17.2% of households owning more than 3 vehicles in 2006.
- Between the Census periods, Penrith’s neighbouring LGA – Blacktown, grew by a staggering 29,812 residents
.
One of the most encouraging figures however identified in the new data was the proportion of residents currently studying post school courses, for example
.
- In 2006 only 7.1% of Penrith residents were enrolled in a University course. By 2011 this proportion had jumped to almost 10% of residents
- Similarly, the proportion of residents enrolled at TAFE (including and vocational providers) rose from 8% of residents to 8.7%.
.
Chief Executive Officer of the Alliance, Bijai Kumar said “this growth and up skilling of our resident population is encouraging, and in line with the PBAs objectives of growing Penrith as a Regional City.
.
“This type of improvement in our local economy presents enormous opportunity for businesses to locate in Penrith to take advantage of growing local skill set and access to a large workforce”. Bijai Kumar added, “With this type of growth and the life style opportunities Penrith offers we expect Penrith to become a preferred location for business to establish and grow”.
.
In summary, Penrith’s population is growing, up skilling, getting older, driving more, holding more mortgages, with household sizes remaining stable and with rising nominal incomes.

Further analysis of the Census data will be provided by the PBA as more information is progressively released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
