Over coffee one morning in April 2010, Ian was telling friend and St Clair High School English teacher, Queenie, about the play he was directing for HSC drama students in Newtown. Queenie asked the question “Why aren’t you doing this here?”; “here” being Penrith.

Michele sent surveys to the English Head Teachers in 80 Western Sydney senior high schools to understand which plays would be studied in 2011. The response was overwhelming; there was a need for access to performances in Western Sydney.

Plays are meant to be performed; not just read. Seeing a live performance enhances students’ understanding of the material being studied.

Emu Heights Productions Incorporated is a not for profit theatre production company based in Penrith. The company was incorporated on 24th May 2010 and a management committee was formed.

The objective of Emu Heights Productions Inc. is to support the education of young people in Western Sydney through the performance of drama texts they are studying at school.

The performances are not solely for HSC students. The plays on the HSC curriculum are chosen for their social and cultural significance – we welcome the wider community to join in the audience experience of these plays.

Our vision is for audiences to find the enjoyment in live performance; to develop appreciation of the communicative power of theatre; and to take the leap in expressing insights from their own experiences of theatre.

Present two theatre productions of plays on the HSC English curriculum as part of our annual program at the Q Theatre, Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre.

Karelle began operation in 2003 in order to bring creative solutions to the needs of adults with intellectual disability . We made the deliberate decision to NOT receive recurrent government funding. Our goal is to make the products and services that come out of Karelle to not only be innovative but as much as possible be the result of collaboration with the community.

With short term seed funding from the Australian Government we began our first employment project that provides 18 people with learning disability a fantastic opportunity to learn machinery and timber work and to be paid at full market rate wages.

The Nepean Belle Paddlewheeler was built by owners John & Helen Wakeling on the banks of the Nepean River at Regentville in 1980 and 1981. Fitted out with stained timber interiors in classic showboat style this real life paddlewheeler has become a widely known feature of Penrith. Catering for up to 120 guests for dining, the warm atmosphere, great food and hospitality of the crew have been delighting passengers for 29 years.

In 2000, the company launched the Penrith Platypus Cruiser – the modern style cruising alternative to the Nepean Belle. IN 2004 the “Platypus” was extended and refurbished to make it more suitable for larger cruising functions. This innovative cruise vessel with stunning contemporary interiors and an elegant, stylish ambience, caters for up to 132 guests when configured for seated dining or for up to 150 guests for a cocktail style function.

Future Directions of the Company:

In 2008/09, the company has built a smaller, faster passenger transfer vessel, the Nepean Explorer that will allow smaller group charters and quicker access to the more distant areas of Nepean Gorge in the Blue Mountains National Park. This service may appeal more to the “wind in their hair – adventure inclined” visitor or allow smaller groups of up to 30 passengers their own privately chartered excursion.

Additional water based services such as a floating café / cruise centre / hire boats to service the Tench Reserve precinct, are in the future plans of the company – subject to the planning support of Penrith City Council.

We sell one product which is called Jym. Our company has developed Jym from the initial stages and have now brought the product to market.
Jym is a handheld device that can be used to measure muscle strength in many different positions and measure many different body parts.
There are no other products like it on the market. Not only is jym used by Personal trainers and Physiotherapists. It can be used by individuals to strength muscles using isometric exercise. Jym can help those that can’t do conventional exercise i.e someone suffering arthritis or is recovering from surgery.
Personal trainers are current incorporating Jym into their consultations, this is adding a new dimension to their business and giving them an insight into their clients which they have never had before.
Past Successes:
Jym is very new on the market although we have already had some exciting sales already. Jym is currently being used for medical trials in the Netherlands and is also being used for a medical trial in Sweden.
